Making Money With Your Camera
Making money with your camera may seem impossible, but it is't. With the right business and photography training I can show you how to produce the photography business you dreamed of. If you would like more information about the courses we offer Click Here
I started photography at the age of 16 when I bought my first camera (A yachica SLR) and a couple of lenses. After using the camera for about a week I was completely hooked on photography and read every magazine that was available from amateur photographer to The British Journal Of Photography. I knew from an early stage that I would like to have a photography business one day, but had no idea about business or marketing. I kept thinking (like most photographers) that one day I would get published in a magazine and this would start my career. In early 1997 I started a course that would change everything. I studied fine art photography and worked in black and white exclusively for the next five years. My work was meticulously scrutinised by my tutor (which I thank him for today) and photography started to become a bit to serious. This course set the standard I now work to.
I registered the domain name www.pureprints.com and started planning my website. Also in early 1998 I recieved a call from The British Journal of Photographywho wanted to feature my landscape portfolio in the magazine. I sent off the prints and had a portfolio and profile printed in the April edition of the magazine. I thought this was the start that I had been waiting for. I got one job from the feature as a landscape photographer, for one season photographing landscapes for calenders and postcards. I started to think about stock photography and advertising photography and decided to work in colour Fuji Velvia slide film, this was the start of the image library I planned to build.
After meeting Sharon and planning to get married it was my job to book a photographer and organise the music for the big day (thank you Sharon for organising everything else). Imagine how hard it is to book a photographer when you are a keen photographer yourself. I knew very quickly what I wanted and thought that Sharon would want the same and so I organised a meeting with a documentary/reportage photographer who is a friend. The meeting went well and we booked our photographer. After the wedding I realised how great it was that we did not have to interact with our photographer all day, and it just happened without any problems. The results were also just what we wanted, relaxed images of us both enjoying the day with our friends and family, a few formal groups and detail shots of the cake and tables.
Shortly after we got married our friends started getting married, and after attending a friends wedding I came back with about six black and white images I liked. One of the images became the logo for our new wedding photography business. I set up the wedding photography business and decided to call it Richard Barley Photography. I had to then build the pureprints.com website based around wedding photography and try and get my first customers. We booked twenty six weddings in the first year and fourty six in the second year and are still growing.
I have now set up www.pureprintstraining.co.uk to help you set up and grow your photography business. I have been asked by many students "How did you do it" and I hope I can now show you how, with our range of workshops and online training videos. We offer a range of short courses that consentrate on turning amateur photographers into a professional photographers. With Sharons experience in Internet marketing we can show you how to dominate the internet in the area you want to grow and make customers come and find you rather than you trying to find them. Do you find your prints are not what you imagined when you released the shutter? Do you spend hours using photoshop with out the results you need? I am here to help. This workshop will help you master adobe lightroom editing techniques and improve your photoshop retouching. The aim of the workshop is to produce the images how you pre-visualised them at the time of capture.
You will learn how to take your images to the next level by breathing vibrant life into them through the use of applications like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop in creative ways. We will be working both on your images and examples from our own library to illustrate effective ways to produce an effective workflow, retouch, output for web and print and much much more.
Choosing Camera Equipment
The main question I have been asked over the past few years is ' What digital slr should I buy? ' I will be producing a number of videos about choosing the right equipment, where to buy it and how to use it. If you are thinking about buying a new digital slr and would like to come and attend one of our workshops you can borrow the equipment we use to try out for the day.
Mastering Wedding Photography
I am in the process of putting together a new bespoke wedding photography training program. This will only be for the committed photographer, as it will last from six to twelve months and be a mixture of group workshops, individual tuition and online video tutorials. If you are interested in attending the new training program this year please email me with your contact details and I will send you more information.
Online marketing including search engine optimization, social online media, effective web design are the key to creating a demand for your photography business. Our one day workshop will show you how to produce and effective online marketing campaign that will grow your photography business without having to spend hours behind a computer. I will be sharing video tips about online marketing for photographers over the next few months.
As we all know light is the key to producing depth and clarity in our images. I use very simple lighting techniques that allow me to pre-visualize how the image will look before releasing the shutter. The lighting workshops and training courses are becoming very popular this year. If you would like to arrange a one to one session or group workshop give me an email.
